What Does a Flyer Do in Cheerleading?
When watching a cheerleading stunt, the first person who usually catches everyone's attention is the flyer. They are the athlete who is lifted into the air and performs some of the most impressive positions in a routine.
However, being a flyer in cheerleading is about much more than simply standing at the top. It requires trust, balance, technique, and a strong connection with the rest of the team.
Balance and Body Control
One of the most important skills for a flyer is maintaining balance during stunts.
Every movement must be performed with precision to help keep the entire stunt stable. Even a small adjustment can make a big difference, which is why body control is practiced during every training session.
Trust Is Essential
A flyer is never alone. Every stunt depends on the teamwork between the bases, the backspot, and the flyer. Trusting your teammates and communicating effectively allows every stunt to be performed safely and with confidence.
That's why one of the first things every flyer learns is to trust the people supporting them.

What Skills Does a Flyer Need?
Although every athlete is different, a successful flyer typically develops the following skills:
⭐ Balance
⭐ Flexibility
⭐ Core strength
⭐ Focus
⭐ Confidence
⭐ A positive attitude and willingness to learn
The best part is that none of these abilities need to be perfect on day one. They are all developed through consistent practice and training.
Do All Flyers Perform the Same Stunts?
No. Depending on the team's level and the routine, a flyer may perform different body positions, transitions, and stunt skills.
Every new stunt is learned progressively, always prioritizing proper technique and safety before increasing the level of difficulty.
Did You Know?
Many people believe that being small or lightweight is the only requirement to become a flyer.
In reality, balance, technique, body control, and trust are just as important. Every athlete has different strengths, and experienced coaches value much more than height or weight when choosing a flyer.
